The Dutton Surf replaced the Commander in Tim Dutton's amphibious range in 2011, after more than a year of development alongside a high-speed Dutton project. The redesign was partly forced by the new British Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test, which required three-point rear seat belts and larger wheel arches. The main reason, though, was that the Commander's moulds dated from the Suzuki Samurai era. For years every Commander had to be modified to take the later Jimny parts, which worked but cost time and money.
The Surf is designed exclusively around Suzuki Jimny components. It shares only the windscreen and weather equipment with the Commander. According to Dutton, this made it much easier to build, cutting the build-up cost from about £15,000 to under £10,000.
