The GT-SM is a light tracked amphibious transporter from GAZ, designed for the Soviet military for use in the cold of Siberia. It can travel over land, snow, mud and water. Several ex-military examples reached the West around 2000-2004.

Design

According to sale listings for two 1993-built vehicles with only 18 km on the odometer, the GT-SM weighs about 4,400 kg with fuel and can carry 12 people or about 1,000 kg, and tow about 2,270 kg. It is about 4.9 m long and 2.6 m wide. A mid-mounted 123 hp V8 petrol engine with a twin-choke carburettor and four-speed manual gearbox gives about 56 km/h on land and 4 knots (7 km/h) afloat. The vehicle has torsion-bar suspension with eight torsion bars, four fuel tanks with a range of about 550 km, and two heaters. It was built to work from -40 to +40 °C and up to 4,400 m altitude.

In the West

In 2000 a GT-SM was advertised in a Dutch magazine, and a German enthusiast suggested it would make a perfect off-road amphibious motorhome. In 2003 another, described as almost new from a military depot, was offered for sale in the Netherlands. In 2004 one was listed on eBay in Ohio.
