The Hinton Shortcutter was built by amateur inventor John Hinton, then aged 76, by combining a sit-on lawnmower with an old boat. His aim was a vehicle that could escape rush-hour queues by leaving the road and continuing along a river. The four-wheeled machine potters along the road at about 9 km/h (6 mph). Its propeller, mounted at the back, spins freely even when the machine is driving on land. The press report that brought it to attention treated it as very much a work in progress, though Hinton argued that in principle 'you could go anywhere on it' and hoped later versions might change the way people travel.
