The LVT-3 was an American tracked landing vehicle of the Second World War, developed by Borg-Warner. According to Fred Crismon's U.S. Military Tracked Vehicles, 2,963 were built between 1943 and 1945, by Ingersoll and Graham-Paige; Michael Green's Amphibious Vehicles credits the Borg-Warner Company with building it.
Design
The LVT-3 differed from earlier LVTs in having two engines, one in each side sponson, both connected to a final drive at the front of the vehicle. This cleared the hull for a ramp at the rear, so that vehicles and troops could be loaded and unloaded over the back. It measured about 7.5 m long, 3.4 m wide and 2.8 m high, with a road speed of about 27 km/h (17 mph) and a water speed of about 10 km/h (6 mph).
Archive material
The information and pictures were supplied to the archive owner in December 1999 by a correspondent, who drew partly on Armoured Fighting Vehicles in Profile vol. 4 - noting that some vehicles labelled LVT-3 there are actually LVT-2s and LVT-4s. The folder holds scanned drawings (side, top, front and rear, cab) and pages of text and captions, plus photographs by Bob Rose.
