The M2 Bradley (also written M2A0) was the basic production model of the US Army's infantry fighting vehicle, first built in 1982. It had a TOW missile system, a 500 hp engine with the HMPT-500 hydromechanical transmission, a 25 mm M242 gun with an integrated sight and a thermal imager. Its armour protected it all round against 14.5 mm armour-piercing rounds.
The M2A0 could swim once its 'swim barrier' or flotation screen was erected, and in the water it was propelled by its tracks. The archive's photo shows one leaving the water at Victory Pond, Fort Benning, Georgia. Early M2s seated seven dismounted infantrymen; later versions carried six. All M2A0s were later upgraded.
