Max amphibious ATV

The Max is a small amphibious all-terrain vehicle made in several generations. The archive holds a picture of a 1999 Max IV sent by its owner in December 1999, and correspondence from the same year with an enthusiast who built his own aluminium six-wheeler.

That builder started from a scrapped Max 2 with usable drive-train parts. He lengthened its frame to Max IV dimensions and strengthened it. He used the same axle seals as the factory but bought them more cheaply from bearing suppliers, along with 26x12x12 tyres and wheels, chains and sprockets. His advice to other builders was to start from a junked Max with a good transmission.
