The SA-13 Gopher, known in the Soviet Union as the Strela-10 system, is a short-range, low-altitude surface-to-air missile system. Its launcher vehicle is a modified MT-LB (MT-LBu) amphibious armoured tracked carrier with the machine-gun turret removed.
Design
A fully traversing launcher pedestal is fitted behind the centre of the vehicle, with the operator seated behind a large rectangular window at its base. Four missile container-launchers are carried ready to fire, with eight reloads in the cargo compartment; SA-9 missile boxes can also be carried instead of, or mixed with, the SA-13 rounds. A simple range-only radar (HAT BOX) sits between the missile pairs. Two versions exist, the TELAR-1, used by the battery commander and fitted with four FLAT BOX passive radar detectors, and the TELAR-2 without them. Some vehicles carry a 7.62 mm machine gun by the forward hatch.
Variants
Later versions include the Strela-10M2 and Strela-10M3, the latter with a dual-mode optical and infrared missile seeker.
