The Type 5 To-Ku, officially the Special Type 5 Launch To-Ku, was a Japanese amphibious tank of the final year of the Second World War. Large and heavy for an amphibian, it weighed about 29 tonnes with its pontoons and had armour from 10 to 50 mm thick. Its turret carried a 47 mm Type 1 gun and a 25 mm Type 1 gun, with two 7.7 mm Type 97 machine guns as secondary armament.
Design
The To-Ku was about 10.8 m long including the gun, 3.0 m wide and 3.9 m high, with a ground clearance of 0.36 m and bell-crank suspension. A 240 hp Mitsubishi V-12 diesel gave a top speed of about 32 km/h on land and 10 km/h in the water, with a range quoted as 320 km. Most sources give a crew of five.
Only one example was built; it did not enter production.
