The Vityaz DT-30 is a Soviet and Russian articulated tracked amphibious carrier, in production since 1981. It is the largest vehicle in this archive by a wide margin, and it exists for one reason: moving very heavy loads across Arctic tundra, swamp and snow where ground pressure, not power, is the binding constraint.
Design
Two tracked units are coupled by a powered articulated joint; the front unit carries the crew cab and engine, the rear the cargo deck. Steering is by articulation rather than track braking, which keeps both units tracking the same path and avoids tearing up soft ground. Wide tracks spread the 28-tonne empty weight to a ground pressure lower than a walking person's.
Both units are sealed and buoyant, and the vehicle swims on its tracks alone — slowly, at around 5 km/h, but without preparation or auxiliary propulsion.
Use
Military users employ it as a transporter for missile and radar systems that must move across terrain with no roads. Civil operators in the Russian north use it for oil and gas field logistics, where for much of the year it is the only thing that can reach a site at all.
Note: variant designations in this family are numerous and the figures above describe the DT-30P specifically. Needs checking against the other variants in the archive folder.
