The A-I-Go was a Japanese amphibious tank intended for the Army. It was an amphibious development of the Type 92 light tank (tankette), but never got past the prototype stage; two were built.
Design
Compared with the Type 92 it had a watertight hull and was slightly larger. Floats and propellers were added for swimming. It weighed about 3,175 kg (7,000 lb), measured about 3.84 m long including the gun, and carried a crew of three. Armament was a 13 mm machine gun in the hull and a 6.5 mm machine gun in the turret, with frontal hull armour of 6 mm.
A 45 hp air-cooled Mitsubishi engine gave a top speed of about 35 km/h. The running gear used four twin-wheeled bogies and three return rollers per side.
Background: the Type 92
The base vehicle was a 3.5-tonne, three-man tankette about 3.95 m long and 1.63 m wide, powered by a 45 hp air-cooled six-cylinder Mitsubishi/Ishikawajima petrol engine and capable of around 40 km/h.
