The BRT 87D "San Bernardo" is an articulated, two-module tracked amphibian built by A.R.I.S. SpA of Lombardore, Italy. It was designed for rescue and transport work over any terrain and can enter the water without preparation. The maker states that it was in service with the Italian national fire brigade corps.
Design
The front module has a cab of self-extinguishing glassfibre for the driver and five passengers. In the basic version the rear module is a flatbed with tie-down points. It can instead carry a heated, lit cabin with 10-12 seats, or an ambulance body. Both cab roofs have non-slip strips and can carry about 125 kg of extra cargo.
Specifications
The later data sheet gives a length of 7.525 m, width of 1.93 m and kerb weight of 5,000 kg. Gross weight is 7,000 kg, giving a payload of 2,000 kg. Ground pressure is a low 140 g/cm2 (2 psi). It reaches about 60 km/h on land and only 2 knots afloat. It can climb a 100% grade, its range is over 500 km, and it can pull up to 5,400 kg at the hook.
