The Iveco Daily Terramare is an experimental amphibian that Maurizio Zanisi converted from an Iveco Daily 4x4 light commercial vehicle. It followed his amphibious Fiat Panda Terramare, which had travelled down the River Po the year before.
Conversion
At first glance the Terramare looks much like a standard Daily. The mechanical parts were left unchanged, but Zanisi welded steel plating around the vehicle to make it seaworthy. He also fitted a waterjet drive and about 300 litres of extra fuel tanks for long crossings. It was reported to reach about 100 km/h on the road and about 10 km/h in the water.
Corsica Channel crossing
In early June 2008 the Terramare left Bastia in Corsica late in the afternoon and crossed the Corsica Channel to Viareggio, about 75 nautical miles (some 140 km). Zanisi shared the driving with Roberto Cibrario, Senior Vice President of Iveco's special vehicles unit. The vehicle came ashore in Viareggio harbour and was displayed at the "Viareggio Mare" show. The crossing supported the Italian aid organisation LVIA and its drinking-water project along the Niger in Mali, intended to supply 12,000 people.
