The MOFAB (Mobile Floating Assault Bridge/Ferry) is a self-propelled amphibious bridging vehicle. Unlike many amphibious bridges, it gets its stability in the water from the shape of its hull, without inflatable pontoons, and it needs no preparation before entering the water.
Design
A 7.1-litre Detroit Diesel V8 drives all the wheels, which retract for water operation; the front wheels steer on the road. Afloat, a very large outboard-type propulsion unit drives it, with a large steering unit at the rear. The vehicle is 43 ft (13.1 m) long, 144 in (3.66 m) wide and 141 in (3.58 m) high, and weighs 54,000 lb (about 24.5 t).
Use
The treadway on top turns through 90 degrees and opens out to meet the next unit. According to the archive note, MOFABs can build a bridge in 30 minutes, and four units together can carry 70 tons as a ferry.
