The GAZ-59038 is an amphibious hydraulic aerial-lift vehicle built by the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant on the eight-wheeled chassis of the GAZ-59037, which is derived from the BTR-80. It was designed for maintaining power transmission lines and other work at height in roadless country where lakes, rivers and reservoirs have to be crossed.

Design

It has a watertight hull with bilge pumps, independent suspension on all eight driven wheels, adjustable tyre pressures, a self-recovery winch, a waterjet with steering for use afloat, and an insulated two-seat cab. The hydraulic lift reaches 18 m, with 6.8 m of outreach and 360-degree rotation, and carries a two-person cage with a 250 kg load. In travelling order the vehicle measures 9.1 x 2.9 x 3.8 m and weighs about 14 tonnes. A 260 hp KAMAZ-7403 diesel gives 80 km/h on roads and 9 km/h in water.
