The Happy Boat is a home-built amphibious vehicle created by Hu Zeshen, a 75-year-old boatman from Loudi city in Hunan Province, southern China, who had spent his working life on the country's rivers and canals. It was reported as one of several farmer-built vehicles featured on a Chinese website and picked up by the China-watching site Virtual China under the headline "Like a Peking Duck in the Water".
Design
The vehicle is intended for both dirt roads and rivers. It is powered by a 5 hp diesel engine supplemented by a 1 hp electric motor.
History
Hu first drove his invention on 25 September 2006. He and his wife planned to use it during China's National Day holiday to explore scenic waterways elsewhere in the province, and he intended to apply for a patent.
