The Panhard M3 is a French amphibious four-wheeled armoured personnel carrier. Panhard developed it as a private venture: the first prototype was completed in 1969 and production began in 1971. It shares many parts with the Panhard AML armoured car.
Design
The M3 is powered by a 90 hp Panhard 4 HD four-cylinder petrol engine. It carries a crew of two and ten troops and is fully amphibious, driven in the water by its wheels at about 4 km/h. It is 4.45 m long, 2.4 m wide and 2.48 m high, with 350 mm ground clearance, a 2.7 m wheelbase and a range of 600 km.
Armament varied by version and included twin 7.62 mm machine guns in a turret, a turret-mounted 60 mm mortar and STRIM rocket launchers. Options included an NBC protection system, air conditioning, passive night-vision equipment and smoke-grenade launchers.
