LMT Gecko 8x8

The Gecko 8x8 Rapid Deployment Logistical Vehicle (RDLV) is a militarised amphibious all-terrain vehicle used by the Parachute Regiment and Special Forces Brigade of the South African National Defence Force. More than a hundred are in service, carrying personnel, equipment and heavy weapons from drop and landing zones to firing positions.

Design

The Gecko is based on the running gear of the Argo Centaur 8x8 from Ontario Drive and Gear in Canada, adapted in South Africa by LMT Products. Changes include a militarised upper structure, weapon mounts, stowage, a 12 V or 24 V electrical system with communications wiring, and a strengthened lower structure for air-drop and helicopter lift. It is also designed to protect occupants against a 200 g TNT charge detonated under any wheel.

Power comes from a Daihatsu DM950T 950 cc turbocharged three-cylinder diesel producing 26 kW, driving through a continuously variable transmission and roller chains to the eight axles. Steering is hydrostatic skid-steer controlled by a wheel. The chassis is a welded tubular steel frame with a vacuum-formed high-density polyethylene lower hull. The vehicle is 3.11 m long and 1.65 m wide, reaches 45 km/h in high range, and can carry 900 kg plus 650 kg in a trailer. It is fully amphibious with a 230 kg load, which can be increased with airbags.

Variants

LMT also developed a family of trailers: general cargo, heavy weapons, and a command-and-control trailer able to support a battalion-sized airborne operation. Vehicle and trailer are cleared for air delivery from a C-130 and for helicopter transport.
